Can I use terracotta tiles in a bathroom?

We don't generally recommend using natural Terracotta in the wettest areas of a bathroom, it can be used in other zones if adequately sealed. Terracotta is a very porous material, improper sealing can lead to weakening the terracotta as well as efflorescence which can discolour and change the look of the tile.

What are terracotta tiles made of?

Genuine Terracotta is made from 100% natural clay, naturally rich in iron, which gives terracotta its signature warm red and orange tones. Before firing, the clay is carefully prepared by removing impurities such as stones and organic matter, then blended with water to create a workable, mouldable material. It is then shaped either by hand-pressing into moulds or by extrusion and cutting. Our own range of Claybourne tiles are produced using a completely natural process, with no chemical additives in the clay mix – a key difference from many industrial brick and terracotta products. Like traditional terracotta, Claybourne is made by hand. This results in natural variation in size, thickness and surface texture, which is part of its character and appeal. Once formed, the tiles are slowly air-dried to remove excess moisture. This is a crucial stage, as drying too quickly can cause cracking or distortion.
